Pastor Bars Hobble Skirt

1910

No Woman, Wearing Garb of Latest Fashion, Can Enter New Jersey Village Church

Groveville, New Jersey — Rev. Peter Henry, pastor of the First Reformed church, has refused admission to his church to any woman who wears a "hobble" skirt, and has denounced from his pulpit those who have adopted this style of dress. He terms girls and women who wear them as "walking balloons," "lunatics" and "godless." He says the style is a travesty, and asserts the girls and women who wear such skirts should be "spanked."

Since the minister began his crusade few of the "hobblers" can be seen in these parts, and although a number of women in his congregation had gone to considerable expense in placing skirts of this style in their wardrobe, they are now bemoaning the expenditure, as they have destroyed them or given them away.

Lincoln — Learned or Unlearned?

Congressman Wise of Virginia, in his address on Lincoln, said: "Abraham Lincoln had neither the learning, the experience in public life, nor the social advantages of William H. Seward. Nor had he the political training, the polish, or the skilled weapons of debate possessed by his great antagonist, Stephen A. Douglas. What he had was a faith which knew no variableness nor shadow of turning, and a purpose that he boldly announced at the outset and never abandoned under any discouragement. It is a mistake to say he was an unlearned man."

There is not or never was a Rev. Peter Henry, pastor of the First Reformed church

There is only one church in Groveville, New Jersey, a town comprised of three streets, Church, Main, and Allen Sts.,New Jersey, The Groveville United Methodist Church est. 1830. My daughter is the 5th generation in Groveville, I am the local historian for this mill town.

I don't know anything about Groveville history. But there definitely was reporting in late August and mostly September 1910, probably all based on the same Associated Press report, that this Rev. Peter Henry had a problem with the hobble skirt. If you search at newspaperarchive.com for the relevant terms, it comes up with around 20 newspapers around the country that carried some version of the story. Of course the original report could have been wrong. That's all I know about it. Thanks for writing.
