On Mount Athos, the "Holy Mountain of Greece," no females, human or animal, may ever tread. On top of the mountain are located twenty monasteries which house 3,000 monks and as many laymen. These buildings date back more than a thousand years and contain many valuable religious works. The monks have a sort of republic there and have preserved their independence and ceremonies thru three centuries of Moslem rule.
